Offered for sale is a delightful British school oil on board after the work of John Charles Maggs, 1819 - 1895. The painting depicts a coach full of travelers, some perched on top, with four horses at full gallop on a dirt road leaving behind clouds of dust. The backdrop paints a rural landscape and a small dog tries to keep up in the foreground. This painting is typical of the romantic idealism that so inspired lovers of Maggs work, including Queen Victoria. He was most fond of coaching scenes and his paintings were collected by British aristocracy.
The painting is in very good condition and set into a carved frame that is probably a little later than the painting but still very nice. We believe the plaque on the front to be inscribed incorrectly, with the last name correct but not his initials. The actual painting is signed "R.A.M." in lower right hand corner.
