Presented for sale is a magnificent glazed Terracotta figure sculpted by Professor Eugenio Pattarino (1885 – 1971). The sculpture depicts a pirate drinking from a wine barrel held above his head, his muscular arms and chest straining under the effort. With his head thrown back and his mane of hair flowing wildly, he would make even Jack Sparrow envious. He is resplendently outfitted in obvious Pirate Couture with no detail left out-- his skull and crossbone embroidered cape, his belt laden with octopus-handled weapons and skull, his Buccaneer boots with fancy buckle harnesses, and his spiked gold jewel-encrusted bracelets all lend an air of high seas villainry. The vividly colored enamels, hand painted in marvelous detail, are also a mark of this master sculpture.
Eugenio Pattarino was born in Florence, Italy in 1885. He studied under Giovanni Fattori at the Academy of Fine Art, later opening a ceramic studio around 1930. His dramatic sculptures were soon famous throughout the world and he was often commissioned by the Vatican to make one-of-a-kind pieces for visiting dignitaries. His pieces were hand sculpted and he was known for both his religious and imaginative sculptures painted in splendid colors with richly chiseled details.
The figure is in very good condition with some restoration. The detail on this piece is nothing short of extraordinary even for this complicated genius. It is signed in gold paint on the reverse.
Size: 17” Height.
