Presented for sale is a magnificent oil painting on canvas by British artist Thomas Edwin Mostyn, 1864 – 1930. The painting depicts a cathedral set in the background of an overgrown garden, a popular subject for Mostyn. The combination of soft blues and greens piled on the canvas with a palette knife overwhelm the viewer with a cascade of intensely blended colors.
This talented artist began painting as a Realist but transitioned to Impressionism in the early part of the 20th century. His lavish dreamlike landscapes became his trademark and the visual illusions he created were solely the result of his vivid imagination. To study the progress of his work it is hard to imagine that they were painted by the same artist, but Mostyn continuously pushed the boundaries and never confined himself to any one formula.
The painting is in very good condition, the frame, original to the work has had a small bit of professional restoration. Signed "Mostyn" in the lower left hand corner.
