Presented for sale is a classic oil on canvas by Italian artist, Francois Brunery (1849 – 1926). The painting is titled The Conversation and depicts two young women engaged in a tête-à-tête on a garden terrace.
Brunery was born in Turin, Italy and signed his name either with the Italian or French version of his last name. He studied in both Paris and abroad but returned to Italy around 1870 where he painted the canals and waterways of Venice using both the plein-air technique as well as impressionism. He was also well known for his beloved “Cardinal” paintings with a touch of the satirical, which made his work popular with the public. He became internationally known and succeeded in popularizing his work in the United States. There is little known of Brunery after the disruption of World War I, but he painted until shortly before his death in 1926.
The painting is set into a gilded frame and is in good condition with the following noted flaws: parts of painting seem to be unfinished notably the hand of the woman seated; there is a small patch on the verso. Also the canvas exhibits light crazing due to age.
