Presented for sale is a magnificent late 18th century English Georgian period breakfront bookcase. The top portion features four glazed doors, the center section hung with two doors and topped with a broken arched pediment. Flanking the blocked center are side sections with a single glazed door. Each door has four glazed panels that are original to the piece with the exception of two which have been replaced with age-appropriate old glass. One of the original panels does have a crack but has been left as-is; one can see the waves and bubbles throughout each panel. The interior has four wooden adjustable shelves in each section.
The bottom portion features four cabinets inset with oval paneled doors enclosed with inlaid spandrels. The interior is fitted with shelves. The breakfront has exceptional inlay decoration throughout including large urns on each bottom panel; it is raised on ogee feet.
The breakfront has an aged finish with some replaced and lifted inlays, which give it a wonderful old patina. The paneled back's construction shows the breakfront's age. The rich mahogany has mellowed and darkened and now has the coveted signs that only older age can impart. This is a stately piece and one of the finest breakfronts we’ve ever handled; perfect for a study, office, or library.
