Presented for sale is a large pastoral Scottish Highland landscape, oil painting on canvas, depicting a shepherd herding his flock. The sheep are picking their way on a well-worn path through a field of heather surrounded by golden forests. The sky is cloudy and there appear to be storm clouds on the horizon. It was painted by British artist Charles Edward Johnson, 1832–1913.
Charles Edward Johnson was a British landscape painter born in Stockport, England in 1832. He first exhibited in London in 1855 and was widely known for his idyllic landscape paintings in Scotland and along the Welsh Border country. His pieces can be found in major museum and personal collections.
Included with the painting is a brief history of the artist written by Peter Montagu-Williams. The painting is housed in its original molded frame, which is in very good condition with signs of ageing and a lovely warm patina.
