Offered for sale is an early 20th century pastoral oil painting on canvas depicting Highland sheep by William Peter Watson, active 1883 – 1932. The painting is titled "Morning on the Moors, Loch Eck, Argyleshire" and is signed on the reverse and again on the front with a date of 1909.
The painting depicts a magical Highland landscape where a family of Scottish Highland sheep are perched on a grassy hill set stunningly against a backdrop of rugged mountains, water, and dusky sky. The painting is lit within, and the sheep are rendered in extraordinary detail, with an almost human-like quality to their eyes and faces.
William Peter Watson was a painter possibly from the famous clan of Watson family painters who were renowned for their depiction of idyllic Highland Landscapes.
