Offered for sale is an English 19th century Regency style gaming/work table made of rosewood and mahogany. The table has bowed ends, each with a pierced gallery, that open to reveal storage wells. The inset-leather top opens on hinges to create a slanted writing surface, with the angle adjustable by way of A-frame supports. The top can also be completely removed to reveal a compartment with a leather-lined backgammon board. There is a lower slide under the backgammon compartment that was used for chess or checkers, however the leather checkerboard is no longer present and the panel is plain.
The table is raised on double S-curved trestles mounted on a shaped and inlaid platform that is raised on bun feet. The table is mounted in ormolu. These combination games/work tables were popular among the aristocracy in 18th and 19th century England and the more pieces you had in a household the more affluent you were. The table is in excellent condition and has been restored with replaced hinges. There is some wear to the leather gaming surfaces; it's a beautiful and very handsome piece.
