Presented for sale is a rare pair of 1787 Sevres Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette portrait medallion plates in soft paste form. The plates are resplendently decorated with triangular cobalt borders painted with large, green fleurs-di-lis alternating with vistas of white, monogrammed with a crown and garlanded flowers forming the initials MA for Marie Antoinette and the double crossed LL’s for King Louis XVI. In the center of each plate is a hand painted portrait medallion of King and Queen respectively bordered in raised jeweling.
The plates are marked in the back for the year date 1787 and are initialed and attributed to Sevres painter and gilder, Etienne-Henry Le Guay, 1719 – 1799. Le Guay was a well-known gilder, burnisher, and painter who was employed at Vincennes in 1742 – 1743 and 1748 – 1749 until he left for a military career. He resumed work at Vincennes in 1751 where he worked on a wide range of wares including a commissioned service for Catherine II.
Both plates are in excellent condition.
