Offered for sale is a charming early 20th century Satsuma Japanese plate in scallop form decorated with wells. The plate is marked for A. A. Vantine & Company.
Ashley Abraham Vantine was an exceptional businessman and was able to establish trade with China, Japan, Russia, and Turkey. He opened a store in New York City in 1869 for the purpose of selling the wares that he collected on his journeys. Being quite the adventurer, he made as many as sixteen trips to China and Japan as well as to Turkey and Russia in his lifetime. The company eventually owned several Japanese factories for the purpose of manufacturing their wares and supplying their mail order business.
The plate is in very good condition with a small rim chip. His company’s mark is shown on the back: the crossed Imperial flags of China and Japan with the Turkish crescent moon and star in between.
Size: 9 ½” Width by 9 1/8” Height.
