Offered for sale is an early 1900’s Palissy ware styled langouste (spiny or rock lobster) plate made in Portugal. The plate features a deeply molded bas-relief background of sand, mussels, and seaweed with a large full figured lobster in the center.
Bernard Palissy (1510 – 1590) was a French Renaissance potter who created fanciful ceramic in three dimensional form of mostly aquatic themes. His work has been widely copied and reproduced by French, English, and Portuguese ceramicists who rediscovered the allure of Palissy ware in the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Palissy ware is sought by serious collectors and can be found in major museums such as the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The plate contains bold strong colors, hand painted in vivid reality, and is in very good condition with a repair to his right antenna.
Size: 10” Diameter.
