We are proud to present an outstanding English Regency period rosewood and curly maple inlaid writing box or lap desk.
This box is exceptional for its beautifully grained woods and inlays as well as its condition. The attached stand was made to match the box, although it is possibly a later addition. The hinged lid opens to reveal a writing surface with drawers and compartments. There are minor signs of age but overall the condition is exceptional.
At the end of the 18th century, these boxes became both fashionable as well as functional. This was the age of expanding intellectual ideas in Great Britain and correspondence became not only a necessity between the socio-economic classes but a testament to their standing in society. The more aristocratic and well-educated the owner, the fancier their writing boxes. These pieces were even carried on military campaigns by higher-ranking officers.
Size With Stand: 20” Height by 22” Width by 13 ½” Depth (Closed).
