Presented for sale is a late 19th century English walnut Art Nouveau hall bench or "settle" with hinged seat. The settle has a tall paneled back inset with floral carvings and “whiplash” grasses in the style of Louis Majorelle. Although the settle relies on the more blocked style of the later Arts & Crafts period, the stylized carved panels, arms, and base indicate touches of the free-flowing style of Art Nouveau.
The settle is in excellent condition; the seat hinge features a locking mechanism, but no key. The bench retains a nice even patina and the carvings are intact and in fine condition. Braces have been added to the back to ensure stability.
Size: 56” Height by 55 ½” Width by 18” Depth.
