Offered for sale is an early 20th century French Biscuit hard paste porcelain sculpture made by the firm of Samson, Edme et Cie in the Sevres style. The sculpture depicts the infant Bacchus sitting on a grape-filled basket that is overturned. The sculpture is mounted on a cobalt platform base.
Samson produced sculptures of hard paste Biscuit porcelain made from molds obtained from the Sevres factory, often using their originals. The molds were smaller renditions of larger sculptures depicting the earlier works of famous artists. Most of the originals were bigger in scale and sculpted from either bronze or marble.
The piece is in excellent condition with some possible minuscule chips to a few of the leaves, difficult to discern because of the hand-formed nature of the piece, and the density of the flora. The sculpture has an incised signature "L. Badessi" on the reverse, and "Genuine Bisquit Made In France" underneath. It is a large impressive piece.
Size: 18” Height.
