Presented for sale is a fabulous Mettlach relief stoneware Pokal or brimming cup with cover, titled Gambrinus Drinking. This is a rare piece, as only a small amount of pokals were made by Mettlach in stoneware and of those, few survive with their lids. The pokal is pictured on page 277 of "The Mettlach Book" by Gary Kirsner.
The intricate relief features elves in their "cups" so to speak and the figure of Gambrinus raising his jug. The jug is in excellent condition with fine detail to the relief. There is a minute restoration to a chip in the lid and a missing handle to the jug on the finial (where elf's face is buried).
Size: 13" Height (Capacity 2.25 Litres).
