Presented for sale is a 19th century French Empire mahogany sleigh bed mounted with ormolu. The bed has a scrolled headboard and identical footboard and can be set in the middle of a room or against a wall. The richly grained mahogany woods are stepped up with well-defined and contrasting ormolu mounts.
Sleigh beds are defined as a style of bed with curved or scrolled headboards and footboards thus resembling a sled or sleigh. The Empire Sleigh Bed became popular in France during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte. They were scrolled pieces using highly figured woods, which were usually fitted with chiseled ormolu mounts. The Americans soon followed with a simpler less ornamental version. The French beds were often made to set in the center of a room or near a fireplace where one could repose without actually sleeping. They were decorated with beautiful silk fitted coverlets and large bolster pillows for comfort.
The daybed is in excellent condition with minor veneer repairs commensurate with age and is structurally very sound. We have provided a custom made wooden platform inner structure topped with a fitted cushion, which is upholstered in a designer made French red silk quilted coverlet. Two large matching bolster pillows accompany the coverlet.
Size: 42" Height by 42" Width by 90 ½" Length (outside measurements).
