Offered for sale is a late 19th century Italian hand carved marble bust of Diane modeled after the "Diane of Versaille" from ancient antiquity now on permanent display in Paris, France at the Louvre Museum. The sculpture is mounted on a socle base accompanied by a matching wine colored marble pedestal. The bust is beautifully carved with outstanding features and depth.
The original sculpture, known as the "Diane of Versaille", was discovered in Italy at Tivoli in 1556. It was installed at Fontainebleau and was one of the first Roman sculptures to be seen in France. Celebrated as one of the most important masterpieces of marble sculpture, Diane of Versailles was eventually installed at the Louvre Museum. Several outstanding copies of the head and bust were carved in the 19th century by talented artists for display in public and private collections.
The bust and pedestal are in excellent condition and would be a showpiece for the most discriminating of collectors.
