Offered for sale is a late 19th century Italian hand carved marble bust of Apollo modeled after the "Apollo Belvedere" of ancient antiquity now residing in Vatican City. The sculpture is mounted on a socle base accompanied by a matching wine colored marble pedestal. The bust is beautifully carved with outstanding features and depth of detail.
The original Apollo Belvedere is one of the most celebrated marble sculptures from classical antiquity (dated 120 to 140 AD) after an original bronze sculpture created by the Greek sculptor Leochares ca. 325 BC. Some famous artists, including Michelangelo, Canova, and Bandinelli have modeled their own sculpted versions of the Apollo Belvedere. In the 19th century, several talented European artists carved fine copies of the head and bust out of marble for public and private collections.
The bust and pedestal are in outstanding condition and would be a showpiece for the most discriminating of collectors.
