Offered for sale is a rare Royal Worcester 13 piece ice cream set with large shell shaped platter and twelve matching plates, year date 1888. The set is decorated in their famous blush ivory finish, hand painted with florals in jewel tone enamels highlighted with gilt.
Ice cream was a scarce treat in the 19th century and the well-to-do purchased special ice cream set to present this delectable dessert to their guests. It was only presented on special occasions, so often the sets were displayed in a cabinet and were cherished pieces of china. Since the ice cream was frozen in a block, it was set on a platter to melt before it was served. Then once it was malleable, the cream was scooped into plates.
The set is in pristine condition, it looks as if it was never used and has been in storage this 120 years. It may have been given to a young bride as a wedding present and was never put into service. It will make a splendid display set; there is nothing quite as lovely as Royal Worcester's blush ivory pieces beautifully contrasted with their honey gilding.
