Presented for sale is a pair of Meissen Blue Onion pattern gilded compotes with reticulated border. The compotes are stepped up in gilding and raised on a knopped pedestal with socle base.
The Blue Onion pattern was created by Meissen in 1740 copying earlier examples of blue and white Chinese porcelain from the Ming Dynasty. The original Chinese pattern was not actually an onion but peaches and pomegranates. In its rendition, Meissen interpreted those fruits as an onion. The Blue Onion has flourished as one of Meissen's most recognizable and endearing patterns.
The compotes are first quality and in excellent condition with just a minute amount of gilt wear and a couple of tiny pin prick nicks to the rim.
Size: 6 3/4" Height by 8 3/4" Diameter.
