Presented for sale is a delightful late 19th century oil on canvas depicting an elderly Italian gentleman seated in a chair. He is embracing a wine cooler and bottle in his lap and he wears a jovial grin on his face. Everyone who is Italian (like myself) has had a grandfather like this!
The painting is set into a gilded Rococo carved frame that is in excellent condition.
C. Agresti worked in Italy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His portraits were characteristic of the charming people found in the beautiful hillside towns throughout the Tuscan countryside. Older gentlemen, poised with their wine or smoking their pipes and cigars, were always a popular subject matter for Italian artists.
The painting and frame are in excellent condition with a few minor age related nicks to the gilding on the frame. A paper detailing past restoration to the frame is attached on verso.
