19th C. Davenport Imari Decorated Tea Tray
For sale is an outstanding early 19th century English Davenport porcelain tea tray resplendently decorated in an Imari pattern. The tray features a flared gallery with rocaille side handles decorated in underglaze cobalt blues and overglaze iron red enamels stepped up with gilt.
John Davenport established his pottery at Longport for the production of earthenware in 1794. In the beginning he specialized in blue and white printed transferware, but started producing porcelain around 1815. In 1830, his two sons Henry and William took over the firm and production remained in the family until l887. Japonnaise and Chinoiserie designs remained a strong point in their patterns throughout their history.
The tray is in excellent age related condition with minor wear to the gilding and enamels.
