Pair of 18th C. Gesso And Gilt Italian Carved Venetian Rococo Bergeres or Armchairs
We are pleased to present a magnificent matched pair of mid to late 18th century Venetian Bergeres (armchairs) in the Rococo manner. The hand carved wood frames stepped up with gesso and gilt are exquisite in their detail, and the elaborate stretchers continue the acanthus carving motif found on the frames. The backs are carved in an unusual cross-hatched design overlaid with flora.
It is rare to find a matched pair of this age in well-preserved condition. Of course, we have to assume that they were re-upholstered in the mid 20th century as the quilted fabric is still in very good usable condition retaining a very indistinct, neutral light-celadon shade that would go well with any color scheme.
The chairs are in excellent age-appropriate condition with a rich even patina, slight restoration has been detected to some of the gesso finish.
Size: 39 ½" Height by 28 ½" Width by 23" Depth.
