Early 19th Century Period French Empire Swan Neck Settee
Presented for sale is an early 19th century period French Empire swan-neck settee attributed to the Paris workshops of François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter (1770 – 1841). The settee is resplendent with flame mahogany veneers and gilt-bronze mounts. The armrests are adorned with finely chiseled dolphin heads, stepped up in gilt. The crimson woven silk lampas, with wreath cartouches, contrasts stunningly with the rich mahogany woods.
Jacob-Desmalter et Cie mainly produced furniture in the Empire style and enjoyed commissions from Napoleon and his court for whom he supplied numerous pieces. The designs used in the furniture created by this esteemed firm were inspired by the seats and thrones of Antiquity found during Napoleon's Egyptian excavations as well as the bas-relief scenes on classical Greek vases. At the turn of the 18th to 19th century, Jacob-Desmalter was one of the largest furniture producing workshops in Napoleonic Paris.
Of small proportions, this settee would make a perfect hall piece for any collector of fine French furniture. It is in excellent condition with minor signs of use and age, including some minor spotting of the upholstery.
Size: 37" Height by 49" Length by 22" Depth.
