This is a quaint post impressionist oil on board depicting a European cityscape by artist William E. Norton. The painting is signed and dated in the lower right hand corner.
William E. Norton was born in Boston in 1843 to a family of shipbuilders which inspired the Maritime paintings for which he is best remembered. Although he was enrolled in Harvard Medical School, his interest in art led him to study under landscape painter George Inness. He was immediately successful both in America and in Europe, later settling and painting in London. In the early 1900's he returned to America where his work continued to be recognized and collected. Many of his Maritime paintings can be found in major museums and private collections.
The painting is in very good condition with minor crease lines on the board; set into a newer frame.
