Presenting a magnificent Italian Majolica palace-sized vase in three parts with bolted base, hand-painted with allegorical scenes.
This vase represents the work of Pietro Melandri, a famous early 20th century Italian ceramicist. Several books and numerous articles have been published about his life as well as his works, and exhibitions of his pieces still draw large crowds throughout Italy.
The vase is resplendent with a sculpted lid embellished with interlaced pierced leafy vines, vignettes featuring cherubs, and a cobalt background painted in grotesques. The main body is decorated in two large scenes, one depicting the procession of Poseidon and the other depicting the procession of Bacchus. The scenes are bordered with applied leafy vines alternating with cobalt panels decorated in grotesques. It is supported on a pedestal base embellished with matching designs to the vase and lid. The vase is in excellent condition with minor restoration.
