Presenting a set of 10 Meissen's Blue Onion pattern reticulated dessert plates. Charming reticulated scalloped borders interrupted with cartouches frame a center bouquet. Some of the plates are marked seconds but we can find no visible flaws, all in mint condition, variance in strength of blue coloring noted (some lighter than others).
The "blue onion" pattern of Meissen was developed in the 18th century and was modeled after earlier Chinese wares. The art depicted is not really of onions but an amalgamation of stylized peonies, asters, and bamboo stalks, the actual "onions" being a mutated misconception of peaches and pomegranates. The Meissen Blue Onion pattern was originally manufactured by Meissen but has become one of the most copied and recognizable patterns in china history.
