Listed for sale is a stunning French third-quarter 18th century Louis XV Lyonnais commode of walnut woods. The commode is surmounted with a thick Italian marble top and finished with finely chased bronze handles and escutcheons. The oxbow shaped commode features traverse rails, the top divided into half drawers with a hidden center drawer. Each half drawer locks and holds the center drawer in place. This surmounts two full-length drawers over a valanced skirt supported on front cabriole legs and blocked back feet. Each paneled drawer is hand carved in bas-relief with lozenge shaped panels flanking a quatrefoil cartouche. The sides are paneled in Gothic arches with hand notched and doweled construction.
The chest is in very good structural condition with a warm mellowed patina to the finish. There is evidence (as with most aged European furniture) of prior insect infestation, but they're no longer active and have not compromised the structure. There is the usual wear imparted from years of use and natural aging, adding a desirable charm to say the least. The marble top is more recent, probably mid 19th century.
