Offered for sale a superb mid 19th century KPM (Konigliche Porzellan Manufaktur, Berlin) porcelain center bowl with stand. The large oval bowl features four arched sides with flared shape decorated in a wide, exquisitely reticulated border. The bottom is decorated in four panels each decorated with a cartouche of hand painted instruments or floral bouquets. The bowl sits on a molded platform with a handpainted scalloped border, all decoration highlighted in gilt.
The interior of the bowl is decorated in bands of contrasting peach and burgundy intertwined with raised gilt tracery. The bowl sits on a matched stand with decorated platform raised on scalloped feet.
The bowl and stand are both in excellent almost untouched condition with a small amount of gilt wear. The mark shown was used around 1870 – 1882 when the factory began using the scepter mark with a diagonal line instead of a horizontal line. The history of KPM goes back roughly 250 years and is the oldest and most famous porcelain-producing factory in Berlin. They are renown for the outstanding quality of their hard paste porcelain and the artistic genius of their hand painted decoration.
The matching bowl and stand are quite rare, possibly at sometime a commissioned piece given as a gift. It is definitely of museum quality, something we don't say too often, but the fine condition, size, and rarity of this piece certainly qualify it for that status.
Size of Bowl only: 7 ¼" Height x 14 ¼" Length x 13 5/8" Width
Size of Bowl with stand: 9 ½" Height.
