Presented for sale is a magnificent landscape oil painting on canvas by American artist, Edmund Darch Lewis, 1835-1910. The painting is titled on verso, "Old Mill In The Green Mountain Vermont", and dated and signed in the lower right hand corner, Edmund D. Lewis, 1869. The brilliant play of light emanating from this rich pastoral scene exemplifies Lewis' reputation as one the premiere Luminist painters of the Hudson River School. As you study the painting, notice the way the encroaching clouds start to hide the sun's light, gradually darkening the left side of the painting but still lighting the tree from behind, as well as the fields and mountains on the right side of the painting. In this gentle contrast of light playing on shadow the viewer can truly appreciate the result of Lewis' excellent training and creative talent.
Edmund Darch Lewis was born in 1835 into an affluent family in Philadelphia, PA. He started his artistic training at the age of 15 under the tutelage of German-born master Paul Weber (1823-1916) of the Hudson River School. He traveled throughout the American Northeast using mountains, rivers, and lakes as his artistic subjects, and was known in his time to be a prolific and successful artist. His early work with oil is considered technically superior to his later work with watercolors.
The painting is set into a beautiful gilded frame, which is original to the painting. It has had minor professional restoration and is in excellent condition. The painting has a small professional pinhole repair to the canvas but is otherwise also in excellent condition.
