Presented for sale is an mid 19th century oil painting of a young woman, "Laura Ann Ayer," possibly painted by "Caroline Hill Wardwell" (1822 - ?) The painter was from a family of painters, was active in Oxford County, ME and Lowell, MA in 1847, and exhibited locally in Maine. She was well-known as a miniaturist.
This painting is set into its original gilt frame, was purchased at Sotheby's in the 1960's with the history written on the back as shown; in very good condition.
