Offered for sale is a stunning late 19th century hand woven French Pastoral or Verdure Wool Tapestry surrounded with a floral border depicting a lushly colored background densely covered in floral and fauna and further embellished with gaming birds perched in the trees.
Tapestries have long been collected for their ability to transform even the most humble of homes into a castle. The word "verdure" comes from an old French word meaning green. Tapestries had been made for centuries, but by the 1600's , they had become a popular and useful form of textile art. The early French verdures owed their distinction to the use of all-over patterns of foliage, however, over time these came to incorporate landscapes and wildlife. The more elaborate and detailed the design the more expensive and desirable they became.
This tapestry is in excellent condition and has been professionally cleaned by a textile expert. The earthy colors are still vividly stable. It has no tears or odors and is ready to display and hang.
Size: 7' 11" Length x 5' 10" Height.
