Presented for sale is a mid 19th century Louis XV style Kingwood Encoignure with matching vitrine or corner cabinet heavily mounted with bronze ormolu. The vitrine features an serpentine arched top with two glazed doors opening to interior shelves. The Encoignure (lower cabinet) features two inlaid doors opening to interiors shelves and is raised on flared French legs capped with bronze sabots.
In the Louis XV period, the encoignure was usually surmounted by a vitrine or étagère. It is quite rare to still find an encoignure with its matching top section, as most were eventually separated. This fine example is exceptional in the quality of its construction with its exotic book matched marquetry veneers and bronze appliqué. The hand blown glass doors of the étagère are original to the piece as are all of the bronze mounts, which have aged to a rich patina. Often found as a pair, they usually flanked a commode and completed a three piece wall ensemble.
The Encoignure is in excellent condition with minor restoration to some veneer losses commensurate with age. This is a piece for the connoisseur of fine 19th century French formal Paris pieces.
