Presenting a handsome walnut Panetiere or bread storage box of French origin, typical of the Provence region where they were often found on the kitchen walls of wealthier homes hanging over a Petrin or kneading trough. They were used for the storage and drying of bread; hence the shelves, small door, and open front and sides. The interior of this box has been fitted with curtains using the gaily patterned cottons of the French Provence region, particularly the town of Arles.
The Panetiere is in very good condition with some structural restoration to the supports on top. These pieces are hard to find and very collectible.
