Offered for sale is a fine example of a reverse painting on glass produced in China in the 19th century of a young woman possibly a young bride who had accompanied her husband to the Far East. It was a popular practice in China, especially in the villages of Canton, for tourists to seek out artists and have their portraits painted.

These primitive and charming facsimiles became a popular export trade in both the 18th and 19th centuries and were often sent home to Europe. Many times, as in this piece, there was an Oriental characteristic to the features of the subject. Note the slight hint of a slant to the eyes.

It is very possible that this could be a mourning portrait since she is dressed in black, with her hair down, and is wearing a string of pearls. The painting is backed with rice paper and set into an oval teakwood frame.
It is in very good age appropriate condition with some slight peeling as seen in photos.

Size: 9" Height x 6" Width.
