A rare and exceptional 18th century German Rococo hand carved giltwood console table with conforming wine colored marble top. The console was carved in the manner of Joachim Dietrich after drawings by 18th century designer François de Cuvilliés. The serpentine shaped console is festooned with crosshatched surfaces, acanthus scrolls, floral garlands, a face mask, and Nubian figureheads. Obviously done by a talented Mastercarver, the console is finely chiseled and exhibits crisp precise details with great depth. Its light airy exuberance is typical of the delicate Rococo style championed by Cuvilliés, who some credit with introducing the Rococo style to Central Europe.
Noteworthy is the fact that the console is assembled from only a few pieces that are joined by mortise and tenon. The exceptional carving is not applied to a frame, but carved from single pieces of wood. The Nubian figureheads and face mask are so incredibly detailed, their features so personal, that they appear lifelike.
Joachim Dietrich was born in Belgium in the late 17th century, the son of a cabinetmaker, and later trained as a sculptor. After traveling extensively, he settled in Munich where he became an assistant to the court joiner. Dietrich collaborated with designer and engraver François de Cuvilliés to produce furnishings for several Royal residences. Dietrich often worked closely with Cuvilliés to interpret the airy ideals of his Rococo designs into the pieces of furniture that he carved. He later earned the honor of being appointed Court sculptor. Dietrich's work and that of his followers has remained a standard of unequaled beauty and unsurpassed quality.
The surface has a thin layer of leafed gesso that was once highly gilded giving the finish a worn down patina, which belies its age and imparts a mellow affect. The console is in excellent structural condition, having been professionally reinforced with corner blocks to stabilize its once shaky condition and to safely support the heavy marble top. There has also been some professional restoration to small portions of the carving.
Size: 37" Height x 45" Width x 20" Depth.
