Presented for sale is a rare late 19th century French cabinet made by Gabriel Viardot in the Asian manner, signed on the base.
Gabriel Viardot was a Parisian cabinetmaker who became inspired by the Chinese-Japonnaise style at the 1867 world's fair. From that time on he devoted his considerable talents to producing furniture that reflected his love of all things Asian. He was so diligent in his efforts to make his pieces look authentic that he had panels shipped from China and Japan to incorporate into his work. He also added intricate fretwork and bronze mounts, many of which he made himself by hand. His pieces are both structurally unique and intricate, truly a genius at work.
The cabinet is divided into two sections: The right contains a large cabinet with a single door with a central blue medallion decorated with applied lacquer and shell carvings. This panel was added by Viardot and actually came from China. The interior contains 9 pull-out lined drawers for the display of delicate items. The cabinet sits atop an open bottom display shelf framed in fretwork.
The left side displays open-stepped display shelves framed in fretwork under which are two drawers. They sit atop a smaller cabinet decorated with an inset panel that has applied carvings. The interior displays the same lined drawers as the larger cabinet. The cabinet sits atop an attached platform base raised on Ogee feet.
The entire piece is decorated with unusual cast bronze mounts including two dragons that wrap around the uprights probably made by Viardot himself and a trademark of his pieces. The sides are paneled and carved, and the larger cabinet is topped with a scroll.
The cabinet is made up of mahogany woods that are very nicely carved. This is a striking showpiece displaying quality construction and workmanship. We have not seen another like it. It is in excellent condition with minor signs of age.
The cabinets and drawers have locks, but as of yet we are still trying to find keys to include with the cabinet. Please note that the cabinet does not disassemble for shipping.
