It is our pleasure to present a period French Louis XVI giltwood ladies' dressing screen with three panels fitted with two-way hinges. The panels are covered at the bottom with watered silk fabric. The tops are pierced carved and fitted with center medallions featuring hand painted scenes in the Romantic style of Boucher.
The back is finished in a plain silk covering. The screen is petite befitting the size and stature of 18th century ladies who might have used this enticing piece to change their clothes coquettishly in front of their suitors without revealing too much. Later is was simply used to decorate a sumptuous French parlor elegantly adding charm to any room.
It has come down through the ages in relatively good condition; there is the rich patina of age especially to the gilded finish with some wear and fracturing present, and the carving is absent from the bottom of the right screen. There is some cracking to one of the medallions at a joint point and some minor fraying and staining to the fabric. We would not touch that patina, however others may feel differently. We like the signs that only great age imparts. It is an elegant and rare piece of fine French furniture and ready to use.
Size: 61” Height by 60” Width (Each of three panels is 20”).
