Fantastic 3 piece set sterling silver centerpiece bowls or sideboard bowls on high feet. This set was made by James Dixon and Sons of Sheffield England. This sterling silver set is hand made and of extraordinary quality. The details are amazing. Set consists of a huge centerpiece bowl and two side bowls, all up on shell pad feet. The bowls feature pierced work with heart motif. Each bowl has 4 hearts with plumes surrounding them. Very regal. The gorgeous repousse' borders are flowers with beaded edging. Everything is hand chased and engraved. This set is massive, weighing a total of 61.6 ounces on my postal scale. The large centerpiece bowl is a bit over 16 inches across (10.5 inches wide), and 7.25 inches high. The two side bowls are 9.5 inches long by 7.25 inches wide, by 5.25 inches high. This is the best pierced reticulated sterling silver work I have ever seen. Obviously made for an important owner, because each piece bears an armorial crest, with hat and tassels (called a Galero, worn by cardinals, the tassels indicating rank, along with the keys of St. Peter). Is this an ecclesiastical or family crest? I don't know. The motto reads Halo More Quam Foedari. Latin for "Death before dishonor". There is also a monogram. Fantastic rococo design but Edwardian in period. All three pieces have British hallmarks for sterling silver, Sheffield , date letter is either U for 1912 or V for 1913, as well as maker's mark. This is James Dixon and Sons finest workmanship, with the repousse' hearts being 1/2 deep. The 4 strong feet are decorated with scallop shells , very classical. All three of these pieces are in excellent condition, from a fine New Jersey estate. Everything is perfect, no dents, no losses, no scratches. Very impressive for the sideboard or mantlepiece or dining table. If you love fine English sterling silver, this set is the best.
