Signed Crown Milano biscuit jar or cookie jar, made by Mount Washington Glass Company, 1880's to 1890's. This great art glass company was in New Bedford, Massachusetts. By 1894, Mt. Washington had merged with Pairpoint. This pretty, squat shaped biscuit jar is hand painted all the way around with raised gold lotus flowers, also called pond flowers. The soft green background is stencil decorated . The base glass is milk glass. The silver is quadruple plate. The lid is really beautiful, covered in embossed flowers and a figural butterfly. Very interesting that the butterfly, as a handle, is off set. The silver plating is in good condition. I do not polish, since I like to see signs of age. I do not see any wear on the lid. The fitting has a little wear, as you can see copper showing on the rope edge only. I do not have a bail handle. Condition is good. I see only minor wear to the raised gold. There are 4 spots of gold worn, each is 1/4 inch only. See close up photos. It is minor, so you don't see this in overall display of the piece. Some looks like just not enough gold was applied. Normal wear on the base, just from the weight of the piece, which is almost 3 pounds. All in all, good condition. The gold is a nice aged, burnished gold. Measures 6 inches tall to tops of bail rings. 6.5 inches across. 4.5 inches inside metal fitting. If you are looking for a bail handle, it is 5 inches from ring to ring. Signed on the base CM with crown, number 521. Lid is stamped M.W. 4418.
A nice textbook example of American Victorian art glass.
