Antique watch chain and fob ensemble with horse theme. This piece of fine jewelry is gold filled, made c.1900. The maker's mark on the watch hook is M.S. & S. This is the mark for Morris Sickles and Sons of Philadelphia, listed in the Philadelphia directory from 1896 to 1915. The back of the vest hook is patented 1903. This ensemble is really well made, with beautiful details like engraving on the riding crop. The horse watch fob faces forward ( flat on the back so it hangs straight )., and it has an escutcheon with engraved monogram. The horse head has good detail. The horse and carriage theme looks great on this vest jewelry. Length is 4.25 inches, chain is 5.5 inches. Condition is excellent. The gold filled is bright, looks just like gold. You will see some dark patches in the photos where the piece was soldered in it's construction. I have already polished out these dark spots, so it looks perfect. Sometimes solder locations tarnish differently than the body of the piece. Even though this piece was made in a jewelry factory, it was bench assembled by hand , applying the various parts together. The solder joints are flawless. These jewelers at turn of the century were extremely skilled at their craft. Very well made piece of men's jewelry. If you collect horse , equestrian antiques this is a wonderful addition. Or if you are looking for a rare and unique watch fob and chain to dress up your outfit, this is it.
