Figural toothpick holder in the form of a porcupine. This is silver, with two touch marks on the pedestal base. One mark is 13, which is Austrian Hungarian empire, 19th century. The mark 13 means a silver standard of 812.5 parts out of 1000. ( For comparison, Germany is on the 800 standard, U.S is on the 925 standard). This is a hand made piece . I have been buying and selling toothpick holders for 40 years and never saw this one before. The porcupine is bolted to a formal plinth. The toothpicks fit into the holes in the porcupine's back. This piece has nice details. Very cute. The silver is quite fragile and very old, so there are a few tiny dents, but not much. Other than that, good condition. Displays well, especially with the toothpicks in it. Size of pedestal is 1.5 by 3 inches. Height is 2 inches. If you own the American silver plated porcupine toothpick, this animal is a tiny bit smaller, but displays the same size because of it's pedestal. Very old and rare for a toothpick holder.
