Victorian period figural napkin ring with a beautiful hummingbird taking flight from a branch. This piece is marked Toronto S.P. Company, Quadruple Plate. Made in Canada c. 1885, during the height of the craze for quadruple plated silver novelties. This company, founded in 1882, got absorbed by the Wm. A. Rogers Company in 1914. This is a substantial size figural. Base is 2.25 by 4.5 inches. The hummingbird is 2.75 inches high and wing spread is 2.75 inches. The crisp detailing on the bird is of great quality. every feather is decorated. Ornate napkin ring with aesthetic style floral decoration, and shield on top. No monogram. The silver finish is nice and bright, and will polish up nicely. I only cleaned it a little bit, as I like to present as found. All the tarnish is black, which is a good sign that it will clean. That is just the tarnish of 140 years. ( Black is what you want to see, gray is what you don't want to see). This is in great condition for an antique napkin ring. No dents, no losses. Shows normal usage. Ring is perfectly round. Only issue I see is some wear to the plating on one edge of napkin ring. See last photo. Other than that, fine, just the normal surface wear from usage. This sits flat on the table for ease of use. This is a really handsome figural ring for your collection of silver plated novelties. We don't often see an antique with a hummingbird.
