Small scale model of a Samurai sword, measuring 13 inches long. This may have been used as a letter opener, but it is beautifully crafted and detailed. The sheath is iron, with brass applied dragons on each side, and fittings for carrying. The blade has a handle that resembled the real thing, but made of iron and brass, molded to look like Shagreen wrapped with cord. The attached Tsuba (sword guard) looks like the real thing, iron with gilt brass fish and rocks as mixed metals appliques. But it is stationary, it is not removable like on a genuine Samurai sword. The blade is 7.5 inches long, made of polished steel, and is quite sharp, even though it could be used as a letter opener. Condition is very good for an antique. Just a bit of oxidation where the blade attaches to the tsuba. The patina of the whole thing is nice and old and dark. The dragon appliques are a bit polished but not much. They appear to be made of brass and copper, mixed metals applied on the iron. The iron colored parts may be made of cast bronze or brass, and enamel coated to look like iron. There is a woven silk cord which appears to be original. I estimate the date to be meiji period, late 1800's to early 1900's. Condition is nice. Shows age but no issues. If you collect samurai swords, this is a small scale model (souvenir?) to add to the collection as an object of interest.
