Incredible Satsuma covered urn, with dragon wrapped around. This is a Meiji period, late 19th century Japanese masterpiece. The hand painted details cover the entire urn. A 3 - dimensional dragon wraps around the top, and continues on the lid. Another 3-D dragon wraps around the bottom. It's ingenious how the dragon continues on the lid, matching up. This covered urn is 10.5 inches high. it is signed on the base with a large signature. The painting is extraordinary. A third dragon wraps around the middle, with a man riding on his back. The spherical part of the urn is covered in people, Lohans, many with gold halos. All of the figures are different, with special attention to details on each face. Lavish use of heavy gold. Two Shimazu mons on the stem. As these three dimensional dragons are hand carved and applied, there are a few damages. Issues are only on the lid dragon. The dragon is missing three horns on his head. He is also missing one tooth and two small whisker tips. His tongue is intact. Because these small parts are all covered in gold, they are repairable by a pottery restorer. Just a little wear to the gold on the dragons spine. Other than that, good. Bottom dragon is perfect, with whiskers, teeth and horns intact. Given the complexity of the hand work on this piece, I am glad it survived even in this condition. Frankly, I could live with it the way it is. The hand carved scales on the dragons are amazing, as are the teeth and the whiskers. This is an important piece of antique Satsuma. The clay is earthenware colored stoneware, with smoke crackles in the glaze. This would be a great addition to an advanced collection of Satsuma.
Let me know if you need extra photos. This piece comes in it's original fitted, silk lined wooden case. Case shows wear but it is intact.
