Large black glass hatpin, made c. 1910. This bold hatpin features a crowing rooster on top of the sun coming up. The carnival glass literature names this pattern "Sun's Up". This one does not really have an overall carnival finish. The black glass has a matte finish. The rooster and sun are painted gold and red, with a bright, fired on finish. There is a slight iridized finish, but not really a fully developed carnival glass finish. The paint is in excellent condition. So is the glass. A few little flea bites on the ground edge, but so tiny they are not worth mentioning. This is the way these were made. The steel pin is 8 inches long. It has a little corrosion but not compromised. The glass top is large size, 1 and 7/8 inch. Impressive, crisp molded image, with good details on the feathers. If you collect antique hatpins, this is a nice example for the collection.
