I have had several pieces of jewelry in the past that are so "over the top" that I am at a loss as how best to describe them! This is one of those items. There is no doubt that Eugene pieces are rare as he only manufactured from 1952 to 1962, but his style is certainly of the highest quality and ranks up there with Miriam Haskell, and in particular, Frank Hess. I don't know what the true affiliation was between "Eugene" and Haskell, but there is no denying the influence of one on the other. I can honestly say that I have seen few pieces that rival "Eugene" while at the top of his game.
The necklace: (please see photos), consists of 3-strands of multi-faceted, multi-colored art glass beads, interspersed with gunmetal gray, faux pearls. There is no verdigris between findings nor anywhere on this set. The central motif reminds me of a treasure chest There is the use of silver metal leave design, rose montees, rhinestones, seed beads of various colors, and faux pearls. The leaf design forms a cage of sorts and within this cage are the "treasures", or an abundance of additional beads of different colors as well as pear-shaped rhinestones (see photos). Three gunmetal gray faux pearls dangle from the bottom. This piece is unique in that the closing clasp is at the motif rather than the back of the neck. All stones, beads and findings are in mint condition and wired in securely. The clasp is in good working order as well. It measures approx. 16 inches in length. The central motif measures 1 and 3/4 inches. The back is signed "Eugene".
The earrings: Are very similar to the necklace in the use of beads, rhinestones, and faux pearls. They are clip-ons and there is a bit of wear to the back of the clips. Looking at the photos you can see that again, beneath the silver metal leaf design, there are a multitude of beads, pearls and rhinestones, again without metal corrosion or damage. They measure 1 and 1/4 inches in length and approx 1 inch across at the widest point. Both pieces are also signed "Eugene".
You must look at these photos! If not to purchase, then just to truly appreciate the outstanding quality and craftsmanship of this high quality designer!
