This is a hand carved wood wall plaque that is hand painted with a scene of a small hamlet in Quebec called Cap Grande Anse. The plaque is inscribed on the backside with “Hand Carving Cap Grande Anse - Pres Madeleine L Moisan Montreal”. There was a famous Montreal sculptor by the name of Laurent Moisan (1849-1913) who was known for his evangelical works in Quebec churches - he had a son also named Laurent, also a sculptor, primarily in marble. Moisan the elder was trained in wood sculpture, so I’m wondering if this might have been by him - it could, however, be someone completely different, but the name would be a coincidence. In any case, this is very well done, obviously by someone with both talent and technique. The scene is raised in 3D detail. It is difficult to date, but does have the look of a piece from the 1910-1920s period. The piece measures 10 1/8” in height by 12” in width and has a height of 7 1/4” There is a wire on the back to enable hanging on a wall. It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear or other defect. This is a wonderful Quebec wood carving, possibly by a well known Quebec sculptor…..
