This is a wonderful vintage caftan that is silk screened, beaded and sequinned with a representation of a peacock - the peacock was introduced to Egypt in the third century BC by the Ptolemaic Greeks and associated with immortality in ancient Egypt. In addition, the image is beaded with faux teardrop pearls. There are no labels in this vintage caftan but I believe that it is of Egyptian origin. It is difficult to date precisely, but I would think that it dates to the 1960s but may be slightly earlier. This vintage caftan is made in a simple style of a lightweight black cotton fabric that has a slight translucence to it. The neckline is a notched scoop shape, and the sleeves are cut as extensions to the shoulder so hang in a comfortable open short length. The piece is loose fitting and cut straight in an ankle length.
Sizing: No size is indicated on this vintage caftan and although a loose fitting garment, this should fit a range of medium to large sizes - please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Top, including the sides that would drape the arms: 35” across
Bust: 27” across, 54” around, taken under the arm openings - true bust should be higher, but difficult to measure due to the cut of the sleeve
Length: 51”, measured flat from the top edge of the back to the hemline
Condition: This vintage caftan is in very clean condition with noted wear, tear, soiling or odour.
This is a wonderful vintage caftan - great way to be comfortable and still bring the bling!
