This is a vintage cowboy/western hat that would have been used by a child during the 1950s, most likely a boy. The hat is of really nice quality for a child’s play hat. It is made of a velour finish felt, I think a fur felt as it is quite soft and pliable. The velour is in a muted green colour, almost a greenish grey or greyish green. It is stitched across the crown, has a gold-toned metal horse head affixed to the front of the crown and is decorated with diagonal white cording along the brim edge. It has a cardboard sweatband, but this is normal, as children generally don’t sweat very much. It has a chin strap cord, adjustable by the red plastic bead, and with a whistle affixed to the end of the cord. Unfortunately, the whistle has come apart, so the “pea” bead that would have been inside the whistle is missing. You could replace this and easily re-glue the whistle. If you don’t care if the whistle works, you could just glue it without the pea. The hat, of course, would fit only a child’s head - it measures 20” around the sweatband. The hat is in very good condition - a bit of a dimple to the crown, but this is really minor. It’s surprising how they used to create such nice quality even for play hats - this is a very cute hat!
